Synopsis

Court said that in combating crimes against women and ensuring better safety and security for them, a system of registration of e-FIRs would go a long way.

The Orissa High Court recently asked the Director General of Police, Odisha to explore the possibility of registration of e-FIR in the State.

The bench of Justice SK Panigrahi said that "the registration of e-FIR especially in cases of crimes against women will go a long way in combating crimes against women and ensuring better women's safety and security".

Court also asked the DG to file the reply before the court before December 20 regarding the possibility of having a system of registration of e-FIR in the State.

The court issued the direction while dealing with a criminal miscellaneous petition filed by a woman, who approached the High Court alleging that the police officers at the Cuttack Sadar Police Station had not registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on her complaint.

On December 1, the court had directed the Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) of Cuttack Sadar Police Station to appear before the court in person. In pursuance of the same, the IIC appeared before the court through Video Conferencing Mode.

Along with that, the counsel for the State, on instruction, submitted before the court that the complaint filed by the petitioner had already been registered as an FIR at the Cuttack Sadar Police Station.

Taking note of the submission, court observed that the grievance of the petitioner had been redressed, however, it went on to consider the issue of setting up an e-FIR registration system in the state.

The matter will be next heard on January 5, 2023.
